TIn rural areas where electricity is inaccessible, pumping groundwater for irrigation is no easy task. Irrigation can make a tremendous difference in agriculture, increasing crop yields by as much as 400% per cycle and allowing two to three crop cycles per year. To achieve these benefits where fuel and electricity are scarce, solar pumps can give farmers a technology that dramatically increases farm productivity. A solar-powered pumping system has lower operating costs and is environmentally friendly. Low-cost models of solar pumps are currently in the development stage with several companies, including both Thermofluidics and Xylem Irrigation.
